FollersTM Foam Rollers Small
Extra firm styrofoam roll 36" long used to relieve muscular tension along the spine, hips, neck and shoulder area.
Small 3" thick
These dense foam rollers have been called “chiropractic on a roller.” Feldenkrais® practitioners and physical therapists introduced Peggy Cummings to these a few years ago. Riders find the rollers useful in keeping the muscles along the spine stretched and pliable. Lying on a roller lengthwise, tailbone to base of the neck, stretches and releases the muscles along the spine and opens and softens the chest and shoulder areas. Another back stretch is achieved when the roller is horizontally rolled from the base of the spine across the back up the neck and back down to the base of the spine.
For a neck stretch on the medium or large rollers, lie with the roller placed vertically under the spine and head and slowly slide your head over to one side of the roller, and then slowly slide to the other side.
Another neck stretch is achieved by moving your torso up the roller vertically, so your head hangs off the end. Slowly move your head from side to side or just support the base of your head on the end of the roller and feel the traction on your spine. The smaller roller is great for putting horizontally under the curve of your neck as you lie on your back and turn your head from side to side with your neck on the roller.
Lying and stretching on a roller is a wonderful way to decompress before and after riding, and after driving a car or sitting at a desk for long hours. There are great home exercise tools to keep by your desk, in your car (great for long road trips) and in the barn. Of course, like any tool of its kind, it should be used gently. If you feel discomfort, do less. If you have chronic back or joint pain, check with your practitioner before using the roller. Your practitioner may be able to offer some exercises to use in conjunction with rollers.
