Connected Groundwork® Halter - Small
Most horses can use the medium size halter. Please inquire before ordering the small size halter to make sure you need this size.
This halter comes with a nylon web poll piece instead of a leather poll piece.
Peggy Cummings designed this halter, which is maximally adjustable and comfortable, to make her Connected Groundwork® easier. In addition, it does not clip under the chin – only on the cheek piece – to remind us not to pull on the poll when leading.
What is useful and unique about this halter: •It is very adjustable to fit any horse’s head snugly. •It does not slip and slide across the face. •It allows the handler to use very light and precise movements that are readily felt by the horse. •There is no chin hook underneath, only rings on each side to attach a lead line or run a line through.
For increasing awareness and re-educating body movement, it is important that horses be supported and lead by directing movement from side to side, instead of the habitual up-and-down movement. Anything we as humans can do (or not do) that prevents bracing and resistance in the horse’s body is beneficial. When doing connected groundwork, if the halter is too loose and slips about the horse’s head, the handler has to work harder to make a connection to the horse. As a result more resistance is created because the contact is unclear and hard.
The Connected Groundwork® halter allows the handler to connect with the horse’s head without holding or adding weight or resistance from the arm or hand. The goal of the groundwork is to communicate clear, quiet differentiation of movement to the horse. What’s wonderful about the groundwork halter is the way it allows a light hand to transmit a message, without pushing, pulling or grabbing. However, even with the halter, old handling habits of doing, pushing, pulling, and yanking on the lead line – die hard. So remember to breathe, release your back, lighten your arm, keep your wrist straight, and have fun! For more details about Connected Groundwork®, please see Connected Groundwork® I.
